3. Ask The Maker: Coloring & Negative Space

8.png

1. Coloring

Step 1: Duplicate (Ctrl+J), Sharpen (Opacity: 28%). To me getting the enough amount of sharpness is important to achieve good icons. I don't like it too blurry nor oversharpened so about 28% will do for this icon.

Step 2: Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Curves
RGB: Input 189, Output 223
RGB: Input 88, Output 114

Step 3: Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Levels
RGB: Input 10, 1.00, 255

Step 4: Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Selective Color
Reds: -21, +15, +6, 0
Yellows: -61, +2, -6, 0
Neutrals: 0, 0, +7, 0
Blacks: 0, 0, 0, +30

Step 5: Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color. Set it to multiply and pick color #ffffe9 with 66% opacity.

Step 6: Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Vibrance
Vibrance: +50
Saturation: -10

Step 7: Layer > New Fill Layer > Gradient Fill. Set it to soft light. Set the one on the left to color #4a4a4a and the one on the right #a59b82.

2. Negative Space

Step 1: Crop the image and leave the background transparent.

Step 2: Below the layer we just cropped, fill the background by adding Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color and set it to color #d5fc00.

Step 3: Back to the layer above the cropped image.
Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Curves

RGB: Input 184, Output 217
RGB: Input 73, Output 87

Step 4: Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Selective Color
Reds: -26, -6, +17, +9
Blacks: 0, 0, +82, +9

Step 5: Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color. Set it to multiply and pick color #fffbe7 with 57% opacity.

Step 6: Add text. You can actually just leave it be, but I want to add text for decorative purpose. In here I use the font 'Bebas Neue Regular', size 18 with color #2761cc.

Tip: Since the background color changes as we edit the color of the main object, you can change it by adjusting the Solid Color to the color you want after you're finished with the main object's coloring so that it won't change again.

And that's it! Let me know in the comment section below if you have any questions.
